IFPDA FAIR | Fall 2021 Online Edition | October 15-31
We are delighted to make our debut at the IFPDA Fair, and to mark the occasion, we are showing six monotypes by John Willenbecher. John’s career spans six decades and his body of work consists of several distinct periods. These unique prints were made in the early 1960s and relate to the artist’s seminal glass fronted, box constructions. Like so many artists of this time, John turned to streets and junk shops of New York City to find his materials, and he preferred to work with things that were still recognizable in their revamped state. We have a selection of these sculptures on view at the gallery now and in them you can see bureau drawers, Christmas tree ornaments, chair spindles, and ABC blocks. Not only did he incorporate these blocks in his sculpture, but this everyday children’s toy also inspired his first foray into printmaking. Willenbecher used the blocks to create a series of monotypes, many of which include hand painted additions. This is the first public presentation of these prints since the early 1960s.
